  3rd Grade News

The third graders have been busy during the Third Quarter. They are continuing their work on fractions in math class and are finishing a narrative writing assignment in Language Arts. Next week, we will begin our novel unit by reading the book "Lowgi Discovers America." In Social studies we are discussing the United States Government by talking about the differences between the three branches. We are focusing on matter in science and are still at the beginning stages by describing its properties. The following links can be helpful to review what we are working on in class.

  Fifth grade

Our fifth graders are soaring to new heights. Students are working hard to complete their Black history projects (social studies) and presentations. They are using PowerPoints and other technology to create their presentations. Students are working on the order of operations in math, and exploring technology in science.
Students can play one free level of math practice each day at http://www.adaptedmind.com/Fifth-Grade-Math-Worksheets-And-Exercises.html

In reading fifth graders are working on reading text closely and determining important information and summarizing. Students are also learning forms of regular and irregular verbs.
Students may practice identifying verbs at the website below:

  What's new in Art Class?

I would like to say thank you so very much to all of the people who were able to contribute ribbon to the art classroom for the weaving project. I was so happy to have such a great outcome from my ClassDojo message. The loom will stay on display on the door for the rest of the month if you would like to see it. Due to the recent late starts I have two classes to work with on weaving still.

Next, we will be working on a project inspired by cherry blossoms. Students at different grade levels will work with a variety of media (paint, pastels, glue, collage). The lessons will vary by grade level.

I am also attaching a fun website recommended for children ages 4-12. It is an interactive website that teaches about art and artists. I have been playing it with my son (he starts kindergarten next year). He loves it! http://kids.albrightknox.org/index2.html

Once again, thank you for your support! Have a fantastic day!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Breckenridge

  What's Happening in 2nd Grade

We are having a great time in second grade! Everyone's Black History Month posters look great! Everyone has been having fun presenting their posters and learning about all the different African Americans who have had a significant contribution in the STEM Field.

In math, we are beginning to work on telling time. Students have started to learn about the 5 minute intervals in an hour, and how long or short a minute actually is. We have also started taking "Fast Fact" tests in math. Students are given 8 minutes to answer 100 basic fact problems. The first test is addition. The second test is subtraction. The third test is multiplication. The fourth test is division. Students cannot move onto the next test until they have gotten 100% on the test that they took.

In science, we are beginning to learn about matter and how matter can change.

As a reminder MAP testing began Thursday and will continue throughout the next week. Please make sure that your child is having a good night's rest and eating a good breakfast so that he or she may perform to their potential.

If you are looking for some extra practice you can visit these sites:
